Former Malawi Big Brother Africa hotshot Siphelire Chitambo popularly known as Sipe has made it into the top five of the Airtel Trace Music Star competition. The grand finale is slated for February 21 in Blantyre.
In a statement on Monday, Airtel Malawi announced that of over 30, 000 entries, Chitambo was among the shortlisted people alongside 13 year old Vitumbiko Maseko Phiri from Blantyre, 26 year old Tiyamike Chakhaza from Lilongwe, Grey Douglas Longwe, 26 from Blantyre and 27 year old Sam Mjura Mkandawire from Lilongwe.
According to the statement, the five were selected based on vocal skills, quality and tone.
Customers are urged to vote for their favourite artist by sending the contestant’s code to 59911. Each SMS costs MK50 only.
“Customers with the highest number of votes will win various prizes ranging from a Samsung Galaxy phone, MK50, 000 e-value of Airtel Money, MK1, 000 airtime and t-shirts,” read the statement.
The winner of this national finals will pocket a MK14 million cash prize and will further take part in the Pan African Airtel Trace Music Star with other contestants drawn from 13 countries to battle it out for the accolade of ‘the next Big African Star’.
The winner of the Pan African show case will win USD 50, 000, a record deal a week long musical mentoring session with Akon in New York.
